Whiz - Initial Ideas

To start off my ideas for Whiz I started to create initial designs for my packaging. To properly help start my design process I started sketching thumbnails to create my ideas.

Packaging shape:

I Decided to go with the box design and the bag design both of the substrates would be cardboard/brown paper in order to make the product seem more eco friendly as you do not have to throw it away it will also appeal to the more out doors audience as it has connotations of nature. I will create mock up so I can see how useful each packaging is.

Concept 1 Pattern:

My first design idea is using pattern as talked about in my previous post. I Like the raindrop pattern at the bottom of the page helping to give a calming feeling. However I also liked incorporating the shape of Whiz into the pattern helping to signify the uniqueness of the shape. I made each pattern to be like water to appeal to all audiences; it is calm enough for the medical audience but the water also appeals to the outdoors audience and the bright colours will appeal to the festival audience.

Concept 2 Collage:

Festival Collage

Medical collage

Outdoors Collage

General Collage

For my second design idea I experimented with collage to appeal to each audience. I started off with collating images from Unsplash (free stock images), of each audience. I then created separate collages to appeal to each audience and at the end incorporated all the images together to make one collage that could appeal to all.

Prototypes

I created prototypes of the packaging to decide which was the best concept and how I want to go forward with the physical packaging design. I made a mockup of a box based off an old piece of packaging I had used. I created one in paper first to see if I had got the net design right and then moved to creating it in cardboard. I knew I wanted both of my concepts to have the whitespace as a cardboard texture due wanting it to look more sustainable.

The box that I used to base my net design off.

I made my box so it could fit all the excess products in.

My first concept collage design was interesting. However, I wonder how successful it is compared to my pattern design (bellow). I think the collage is good for out doors and festival audience as the jumbled imagery created movement and conveys excitement. However the pattern appeals to all audiences which is what I am trying to aim for.

Unhappy with my first design I did create another front design which was more successful however I am still not entirely sure it appeals to the wider audience. As even with imagery for the medical audience (calming water) it is still more appealing for the two more active audiences. I think the collage doesn't create the right balance of appeal between audiences.

This is my pattern design concept, I am pleased with how that came out. To develop it further I will keep on developing my pattern and also develop/edit the placement of the front and incorporate a slightly more obvious whiz image.

Research

Pattern

William Morris

One of the most famous pattern designers of the Nineteenth Century. Main thing I am looking at is how his patterns are very organic and dynamic. It's Like each pattern is moving slowly and calmly. I tried to copy the organic shapes when creating mock ups of my own pattern to see how it would work. Which I thought went well as my patterns were able to convey a calming effect.

Imma Garcia

A commercial pattern designer who has designed patterns for Ikea and John Lewis. Uses simple repeating organic shapes to create Her patterns. Her patterns maybe different to William Morris but both of the patterns create the same calming effect. I drew inspiration from her through creating my own organic shapes while imitating the shapes that water creates.

Collage

Oltre Collage Collective

Is an Italian collage community who believe that together through collaboration they can make interesting and thought provoking collages. I was inspired by this collage because there are so many different images meshed into one to create and creates a clear message, which is of love. I took inspiration from this to try and create a different visual narrative in my own collage.
