In the book each chapter is going to have a title. The poems are separated into six different categories, Fear, Guilt, Hope, Struggle, Loss and Earth. My class was divided up, so each person created a design for one category. My assigned category was 'Fear'. For this title we used a new technique, blind embossing. Where you do not put any ink on wood/metal type and put damp paper through the roller this creates an embossed effect.

Method

1. Set out the letters on the metal tray to create your word.

2. Create a test print through using dry paper.

3. Sandwich a microfibre cloth in between the roller and the paper.

4. Roll the roller through one time.

5. Once happy with design go on to use dampened paper.

6. Blot with two dry pieces of paper.

7. Repeat step 3.

8. To make sure it drys flat sandwich it between two bits of wood.

Developments

In the end I create two final embossings. I created many developments in between (seen below) to get to my final embossings.

Some developments came out better than others. I found that the metal type was better than wood type due to having sharper edges. To create the feeling of fear come across in my type I used capital letters (connotations of alertness) and in some I experimented with letters looking like they were shaking and in others I used wood type to faintly come over the fear to create this overwhelming emotion that fear can give you.

Final Designs

I was pleased with my final designs, the placement of these words are going to help me next week when I start to print my actual chapter title. The first one convey fear through the layering of one strong type over a small little one making the fear look like its is overwhelming and taking up the whole page. The second one I like because the word looks a bit jumpy as if it is scared through the displacements of the word.

Research

Simon Schubert

To further my research after the session I researched Simon Schubert. Who uses another method to subtly create art from paper. Schubert folds to create a blind embossed effect. I think it is interesting way to create graphic design through manipulating the substrate as well as other elements in the graphic. The use of line helps to add depth to the image creating perspective.

Mario Hugo

This cover was created by Mario Hugo which through it is created on the computer it has the same effect as the blind embossing. He use the typography as the image because it slowly seems to be fading away backing up the idea of the title 'Things Cease to Appear'. The way he made it look like the text was fading away through clever use of shadows surrounding the type.
