Glyphs Project - Workshop 1

In order to understand our creation of our own glyphs through this workshop we learnt to break down the fundamentals of our own glyphs in our language. By deconstructing, editing and analysing the font Futura.
Analysing
In this task we had to analyse the font Futura and with the given grid in front of us we had to place a skeleton outline on the grid. Here we learnt about the anatomy of type.

On this image you can see four lines this is a grid so you can keep the letter coherent and understandable. The base line is where the main part of the letter rests. Anything that drops below is a descender and the descender height the maximum height a descender can be. The X height is where the many body of the letter will reach and anything higher (such as being in uppercase) is an ascender and the maximum height is marked by the ascender line.
Deconstructing
In this stage we learnt to experiment and try and make our own type face out of the deconstructed strokes of Futura. This made us learn the fundamentals of letter i.e. what makes an 'o' an 'o' or an 'a' an 'a'.

I enjoyed this section of the workshop because it really made me question what are the elements of a letter form and how can abstract them?
Creation
In this section we started to create our own letter forms thus developing our knowledge. We were given different type of grids to colour in a create our type face. The only rule was to fill the whole width of the grid.

Overview
Over all this workshop was really useful because it made me learn the basics of the creation of a type and I know this will be useful when moving onto stage 5 and 6 where I have to properly think about the anatomy of my type more.
