To develop from my original drawing me and Rosslyn started discussing how to move further on in our project. We decided to refine the drawings of buildings and use different media whilst also starting think about colour with water colour and pastels.

To develop my drawings more, I was thinking of how I could abstract them into wearable art. I decided to go out and take photos of the oxford architecture. Keeping in mind that I wanted it to be abstract. These photos helped me to create suitable stimulus in my developed drawings. To inspire me I looked at the photographer Aaron Siskind who's work centres on abstracting buildings (as seen below).

Rome: Arch of Constantine 5

I made sure to just take photos of the buildings, careful not take photos of the trees due to it being for the spring/summer collection therefore bare trees would give mixed signals. Furthermore I was through out looking at line and shape of the building. I used a telephoto lens in order to zoom in high into the eaves of the buildings. Once the photos were taken I put them into a contact sheet so I could evaluate which were the best to incorporate into the scarf design.

Meanwhile Rosslyn was creating abstract backgrounds for the scarf using water colours. We decided one way we could incorporate is roughly make the water colour work with the images that I took. And define the image with rough charcoal line (developments from my initial first images).

We were inspired by the works of Willem De Kooning a dutch painter who created many sketches with charcoal that were rough and abstract (as seen bellow).

To decide on whats the best image to use, I started to draw over the shortlisted abstract images with charcoal to see how it could look. Over all I was pleased with the images that did show off a little bit more of the structure of the building (i.e. windows and coveings). Because when we put photos and/or sketches into a scarf the customers maybe able to depict that it is architecture from Oxford.

To continue on we are going to source some substrates which has texture and experiment how different mediums look on the substrate. Then hopefully make our first initial design.
