Book Binding 2

From using photocopied sheets that we had create last week. We created different ways of book binding this time a little more experimental. We created a concertina and then using different folding techniques we created other styles of books.

Concertina

To create a concertina:

1.

Cut two sheets to size.

2.

You have to first create the mountain folds (the fold that will be sticking out) this is done by folding the sheet in half and then fold the sides in half but make sure it always folding into the middle.

3.

Flip the sheet round to create the valley folds and do it again but make sure its still halving the unfolded sections do as many times as you want. Do these two steps on both sheets.

4.

Put the two sheets on top of each other (folded down) and using a pricker, poke a whole into the middle.

5.

Using a craft knife slice one sheet from the centre point to the right and on other slice to the left

6.

Slot the sheets together.

If I were to do this concertina fold again I would make sure I have printed on both sides. Because both sides would be shown where as, for a front cover of a book one side would only half to be printed on.

Folding Styles

Book Fold

In this style we learnt how to make a book with three pages just out of one A4 sheet. How it is created is you fold it 1 x 3 and slice down the middle. fold it in half again and you have create a book!

Other folds

We Found out other folds which can create a book from one sheet of paper. Such as folding the sheet 3 x 3 and then cut a spiral into the sheet (above left) with a craft knife making sure you are going along the fold lines. Then fold one way then the other concertina style.

Another way of folding is to fold the same amount as the spiral fold (3 x 3) but instead of cutting a spiral along the folds. Cut a zig zag along the folds and fold the same way once cut.

Overall these two workshop have been very useful for me, when experimenting for my Zine and Data research project.
