In this workshop we were tasked to take images of graffiti (unofficial typography) and signs (official typography). We then brought them into class and turned the unofficial typography into official using the official typography as inspiration. This workshops was pushing us to realise that words out of context can mean something entirely different to the words in context.

Inversions

I then moved onto InDesign to create images of my unofficial language in an official format. Changing the context of the word.

Out of Context

To explore this brief further I then went around the art building to put the word 'Soak' that was originally graffiti on a tree into official typography. Taking the word out of context thus changing the meaning of the word.

Research

Before I set out on creating a solution for the brief I researched some artists to get inspiration and understand the brief more. I researched Ed Ruscha, Jenny Holzer, and Bruce Nauman.

All of them use words and context to create their art. Ed Ruscha used simple painted text of one word to change the context of a painting. Jenny Holzer uses the world around her to change the context of the words she is putting in place. Bruce Nauman used neon signs to manipulate the words and change their context.
