Project 3 - Way finding and Signage

The Final stage of the Exhibition that I designed was the way finding and signage for the exhibition. I knew from designing my exhibition I wanted something that was simple with curving lines that just leads the viewer through out the space. I wanted the space not to have any signs leading them around just letting the space lead the viewer by itself.

Research

To start off my research I looked at other exhibitions about Zaha Hadid which she made.

Zaha Hadid and Suprematism - Zurich 2010

This Exhibition was all about Zaha's relationship with Suprematism a major inspiration for her. In this image you can see she has used the space to create the exhibition and has used shape to lead the viewer through the gallery. This is an important part of Zaha's work which I also want to incorporate into my design for the exhibition.

Exhibition by Zaha Hadid - Padua, Italy 2010

This image was a main inspiration for me; from above the the objects in the exhibition look like they are creating this free flowing line. Similar to my visual identity incorporating free flowing would be very useful for my exhibition as it will make it more coherent.

Addressing the Century 100 years of Art and Fashion - Hayward Gallery, 1998

I found this in the book 'Architecture of Zaha Hadid in Picture by Helen Binet'. Zaha Designed this exhibition which is not about herself but about Fashion. It is interesting to see how Zaha designed an exhibition for a different matter. This image is influential because she has used curved objects to create a way finding around the space you can see there is not many signs but the object is the thing that leads the viewer around the space. This I am going to consider to make the walls of the exhibition the way finding.

I then looked at many examples in the book 'Which way to go?' this was good for me to get an idea of how professional way finding works.

Cooper Union - Pentagram

I was intersected by this way finding system because it used the space as the way finding there was no added signs it was just using the space already provided. Which is very stream lined with Zaha's own work. The inspiration of the font for this work is the Sign on the outside of the building similar to Zaha using the building surrounding as inspiration for her design.

Initial Idea

This was my first idea for way finding I made it in my initial stages of creating my logo. It is based off the original lines I made for the Vitra Fire Station. From the very start I used this idea of letting the space lead the viewer around and not signage. I came back to this design after I had created most of my visual system and needed to change it.

I started of by thinking of the shape of my space I wanted to make so is led the viewers through the exhibition by itself I decided on this 's' like shape to help move the viewer around the space. Because it is free flowing with no solid lines.

I then decided to create an idea of what the walls looked like in the space. I soon realised that I need to have two walls to create a corridor. Because having one wall which had the exhibition on either side made it less free flowing and making the view have to think where to go next where as with two walls this meant that the viewer could be led round the exhibition easily.

This was my first floor plan I ended up with a shape very similar to this, I also started thinking about what would be in my exhibition.

This was the floor plan that I based final map off. I wanted to use these walls as a way of leading the viewer around the exhibition very easily.

Digital

I then moved map onto digital format by doing the same as my sketched lines of the building. I sketched the walls of the exhibition and scanned them into illustrator and image traced them into a vector graphic.

These were posibillities of me trying to find out the best possible way of creating and easy to view map. With the map on the left it was difficult t see properly and the map on the right just looked awkward.

Moved on to creating this map with a simple key to describe the information on the map using the numbers helps to emphasis the shape of the space.

Content

Here is an explanation of the content of the Exhibition:

1. Introduction

This will be the first section of the exhibition it will describe who Zaha is and why this exhibition is here.

2. Influences

This section will talk about all of Zaha influences and possible reasons why she chose to make her work the way she did.

3. Manifesto

This will cover all her work and discuss how each building was an experiment; they were all a work in progress getting her closer to an ideal space for living. This section is called Manifesto because Zaha Hadid’s partner in architecture Patrik Schumacher stated that ‘each building is a part of her manifesto for life’.

Furthermore, this section will discuss her sketching and process, thus linking to the overall design that I have created.

4. Conclusion

This will summarise the whole exhibition and urge the viewers to look more into her work. Also it will state how the viewers could make the world better around them.

Signage

I decided to create a mock up of what could be on the exhibition walls in the 'Introduction' section. To start off I created a sketch to get my possible ideas/layout on paper.

Final Design

This is my final design for my signage this a mock up of what the wall could look like. When creating the signage I made the writing and imagery at least a 1.5 meters tall. I then used another sketched line underneath which will occur under every section of the exhibition to help lead the viewer through the space.
